HILL & FARM HOUSE CAFE NEWSLETTER | EDITION 005
MARCH 2026

March Cafe

MIKE DROP

(insert laughter)

 Mike - Owner

Mike returns with another edition packed with café updates, community stories, fitness adventures, behind-the-scenes projects, and, of course, a healthy dose of questionable dad jokes. From exciting events and new seasonal drinks to Run for Your Bun and heartfelt reflections on community, this issue celebrates the people, moments, and connections that make Hill House Café and Farm House Café feel like home.

Well… everyone run!!

Because if you’re reading this, it means the newsletter keyboard has been handed back to me this month — and that also means Mike’s questionable one-liners and dad jokes have officially made a comeback. If I can’t make it as a stand-up comedian, I’ve decided the next best option is keyboard comedy, so consider yourselves my slightly captive audience.

Peter kicked off the last newsletter edition, so I figured it was only fair that I jump back in this month and share a few thoughts from the café floor — and apparently from the gym floor too these days.

March has arrived, and with it comes what is apparently called “March Madness” The holidays are well and truly over, schools and universities are back, work routines have returned, and Auckland traffic is once again reminding us all that patience is a virtue. You know that slow crawling thing where you spend more time staring at brake lights than actually moving? Yes… that one. Summer, meanwhile, seems to have packed its bags and left the building rather abruptly. One minute we were enjoying sunshine and long evenings, and the next minute the temperature dropped so suddenly I actually considered wearing pants and long sleeves. Now anyone who knows me will understand how serious that statement is. I am traditionally a shorts and T-shirt all year kind of person, so I’m currently holding out as long as possible before admitting defeat to autumn. If you see me stubbornly refusing to wear a jacket, just know I’m fighting a personal battle with the seasons.

Along with the sudden weather shift has come the other seasonal classic — the flu doing its annual tour around Auckland. The past couple of weeks have been a bit rough with sickness doing the rounds, and unfortunately our team hasn’t escaped it either. Between the runny noses, coughs and full body aches, it’s been a reminder for all of us to slow down a little and take care of ourselves. Sometimes the best thing we can do is rest, drink plenty of water, get some sunshine when we can, and give our bodies the space they need to recover. Life moves fast, but our health always deserves a little attention.

On a much more exciting note, we’ve been working on some really fun things behind the scenes for the community. I’m especially excited about some Easter activities we’re planning at Farm House. Leilana will be sharing more details further down in the newsletter, so keep reading because it’s shaping up to be something really fun.

We’re also starting to think ahead to Mother’s Day High Tea, which is always such a special event in the cafés. These occasions are a chance for us to create something beautiful, celebrate the amazing mums and mother figures in our lives, and give people a lovely reason to slow down and spend time together over some delicious treats.

Outside of the café world, I’ve also been spending a lot more time training lately. Peter, Leilana and I have been doing BFT sessions together, which has been such a cool experience. It’s been awesome motivating each other, pushing ourselves and watching everyone get stronger and fitter along the way. Through that I’ve also been learning more about the whole HYROX fitness craze, which looks both slightly terrifying and incredibly exciting at the same time. The plan is to start training properly for that from around May.

Naturally, that got my brain ticking about ways we can bring that energy into the café community as well. Some of you might remember we did a little event called Run for Your Bun last year, and honestly it was one of my favourite things we’ve done. People came along for a run or a walk together, kids joined in, families got involved, and afterwards everyone enjoyed coffee and a well-earned cinnamon bun. And really… running for a bun feels like a far more reasonable motivation than running for no reason at all. So I’m keen to bring something like that back — maybe a small run club, a family fun run, or something along those lines. If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, let me know next time you see me in the café or keep an eye on the website as we’ll share more details soon.

Behind the scenes we’ve also been having a lot of fun experimenting with new cocktails, mocktails and specialty drinks. Winter might be slowly creeping in, but that just means we get to start thinking about some cosy, delicious and slightly indulgent drinks to warm things up. I’m really excited about what’s coming there, so stay tuned.

Before I finish up though, I do have one small request to whoever is responsible for Auckland’s weather. Could we please dial back the wind just a little bit? Honestly, it has been brutal lately. The kind of wind that makes you question every outdoor seating decision and threatens to steal your croissant mid-bite.

Lastly, I just want to say how lovely it has been seeing so many familiar faces around the cafés again lately. I’ve been splitting my weekends between Farm House on Saturdays and Hill House on Sundays, which has been really special. Sometimes I even see the same people both days — which either means you really love the coffee, the food… or you’re just keeping an eye on me.

Either way, I love it.

So if you see me floating around the café, come say hi — and feel free to bring your best joke with you as well. I’m always looking for new material.

For now though, I’ll leave you with this one:

Why did the coffee file a police report?

Because it got mugged.

See you in the cafés soon

SIP SOMETHING FANCY

ZERO BOOZE  | BIG FLAVOUR

Mocktails are having a bit of a moment — and we are absolutely here for it.

Whether you’re a non-drinker, the desi driver, taking a break from alcohol, or just feel like treating yourself to something a little fancy, our mocktails are a delicious way to upgrade your cafe visit.

Refreshing, vibrant and the perfect little treat alongside brunch or even a cheeky Sin in a Bun.

Right now we’re pouring a few favourites:

Ooh La La

A non-alcoholic take on our Ooh Ahh cocktail — mango and passionfruit with a bright fizz from Fever-Tree Sicilian Lemonade.

Strawberry Spritz

Light, sweet and refreshing with chopped strawberries and a fresh strawberry garnish.

Passionfruit & Vanilla Spritz

Sweet vanilla meets tropical passionfruit for a smooth, summery spritz.

And this is just the beginning — we’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with new mocktails and specialty drinks behind the scenes. MORE COMING SOON!

A LITTLE MORE SIN THIS MONTH

MARCH IN TO SIN

Soft, sticky and just the right amount of indulgent — our Sin in a Buns are back with a fresh line-up of flavours to tempt you.

The classic OG Bun is available at both Hill House and Farm House, because some things are simply too good to keep in one place.

At Hill House, we’re serving up:
• Blueberry
• Oreo Cookie Monster
• Kit Kat Cookie Dough

And over at Farm House, the sins continue with:
• Pina Colada
• Caramelised Banana
• Pistachio

Whether you're grabbing one with your morning coffee or taking a box home to share (or not — we won’t judge), there’s a flavour waiting to become your new favourite.

Go ahead… indulge in a little sin.

MEET THE TEAM

If you’ve visited Farm House on the weekend, chances are you’ve already met Chance.

He’s our Maintenance & Logistics Manager, the man behind the scenes helping keep everything running smoothly — and also the friendly face you’ll find at the Gelato POD at Farm House(aka the G-POD) from Friday to Sunday, scooping your gelato, mixing cocktails, pouring mocktails, wine, beer and spirits, and bringing all the good vibes.

With the music playing, the energy high, and a smile always ready, Chance is known around here as our gentle giant — super strong, super kind, and always up for a good laugh. When he’s not keeping the café humming or serving up drinks, you’ll probably find him in the gym… which makes sense considering he casually deadlifts 200kg like it’s just another Tuesday.

Working a busy weekend at Farm House can feel a little bit like Disneyland sometimes, so that strength definitely comes in handy.

Here’s a little more about Chance:

What do you love to do in your spare time?

The gym is basically my second home.

What do you love about your job?

Meeting lots of interesting people from all walks of life.

Favourite menu or cabinet item?

Caramel slice… and the coconut almond cake — although apparently I’m not allowed those anymore!

Something funny about you people might not know?

I’m either dancing or singing when no one’s looking.

A funny moment at work?

Bringing drinks to a table and watching people’s reaction when this big guy pops out with a very soft voice saying “Hi, drinks for the table.”

A quote you live by:

“Inspiration inspires inspiration.”

What makes you smile every day?

Waking up knowing you are loved and that you are somebody.
